But its when it seems to control your life it becomes a problem? Sometimes anxiety can be very specific, fears around spiders, travel, injections and so on, seem to be very common. But it can just be a general feeling that something bad is about to happen, with no idea of what that is. This is known as GAD, Generalised Anxiety Disorder.
What is going on here? Well to put it simply, the mind has strayed into the future and dreamed up a whole scenario around “what if the plane crashes” or “it would be terrible if ..............” or any number of anxious possibilities that scare us. The body of course reacts as if this is actually happening, it has no idea that it is just a thought. The fight or flight response has been activated. This is an instinctive ancient response to help us in times of real physical danger. Adrenalin is sent to the body cells ready for the fight or flight of your life. Except of course for most people, there is nowhere to flee and no one to fight.
So what to do about this anxiety problem? Well one solution is to practice using an NLP (neuro Linguistic Programming) calm anchor. I can explain this calming coping technique on the very first appointment. I always give a printout of how to use this so that you can take it away with you to practice and use as required. Hypnosis is an additional tool that can be used to programme your mind to feel calmer in these anxious situations. The hypnotic part of the session can be recorded if you have a MOB or tablet to listen and reinforce your new way of thinking and responding. All of this can help you move to a calmer, happier way of being.
