Anxiety
You might not be surprised to learn that anxiety is one of the top key words used in searches with regard to hypnotherapy. We live in anxious times. People in general don’t like uncertainty, and there has been a lot of that in recent years. There is also a tsunami of information and disinformation, which can add to anxious feelings.
If you or someone close to you is struggling with anxiety, hypnotherapy is an option for learning to live with and manage anxiety. We all have anxiety to a degree, it is a part of our brain which is alerted to any potential danger around us, and its function is to keep us safe. This is commonly known as Fight, Flight or Freeze mode. This is an instinctive response to any danger that might happen in life. However, in some people this function can get over activated and it can start to feel like you are in a permanent state of anxiety. Anxiety might be focussed on one particular issue, eg fear of flying or travel, or might just be a general feeling of dread that something awful is about to happen. When someone reaches this point it is time to do something about it. But where to start? Its hard to get appointments with GPs, and waiting lists for treatment are long.
Hypnotherapy is a process that can help people of all ages manage their anxiety. It can help them bring anxiety back down to a manageable level. How does this happen? Well, over a series of sessions, rarely more than six and sometimes as few as one or two. Simple coping techniques can be learnt to deal with the anxiety. First steps are usually to recognise what your triggers are. Do you recognise your own emotions? It can be as simple as a thought “What if this or that or the other happens?” fill in the blanks. It’s where people ask themselves a series of questions and fail to be satisfied with any of the answers. Or maybe it always assuming the worst is about to happen, and if it occurs your inability to deal with it, (catastrophising).
These kinds of thoughts can keep people in an anxious low mood so that they consistently process incoming information in biased and distorted way.
If you recognise the above or similar feelings, and are interested in learning to find a more balanced view of situations that allow more options you might like to consider hypnotherapy as a way to change and to move forward in your life. Enabling you to stand back and ask yourself how likely any of these events are to happen. Learning ways to adapt constructively, realizing that you really can trust yourself, recognising that you are more capable and resilient with a host of inner strength and resources, more perhaps than you had previously realised. Gradually becoming the person can who can cope (de-catastrophising). Finding new ways of living with uncertainty. Learning to switch off that part of you and get on with doing something else more enjoyable, a bit like closing a program on a computer.
